Parallels between Aristophanes's Speech in The Symposium (Ancient Text) and (Contemporary Song) by Savage Garden

ParallelLyricsListen
Both the ancient text and the lyrics of both of these songs talk about each person finding his or her soul mate; the person they are meant to be with. The lyrics particularly relate to the part in Aristophanes’s speech where he says, “And such a nature is prone to love and ready to return love, always embracing that which is akin to him. And when one of them meets with his other half, the actual half of himself, whether he be a lover of youth or a lover of another sort, the pair are lost in an amazement of love and friendship and intimacy, and one will not be out of the other’s sight, as I may say, even for a moment: these are the people who pass their whole lives together, and yet they could not explain what they desire of one another. For the intense yearning which each of them has towards the other does not appear to be the desire of lover’s intercourse, but of something else which the soul of either evidently desires and cannot tell, and of which she has only a dark and doubtful presentiment.”

Maybe it’s intuition But some things you just don’t question Like in your eyes I see my future in an instant and there it goes I think I’ve found my best friend I know that it might sound more than a little crazy but I believe [chorus:] I knew I loved you before I met you I think I dreamed you into life I knew I loved you before I met you I have been waiting all my life There’s just no rhyme or reason only this sense of completion and in your eyes I see the missing pieces I’m searching for I think I found my way home I know that it might sound more than a little crazy but I believe [repeat chorus] A thousand angels dance around you I am complete now that I found you [repeat chorus to fade]

In both cases we find a tie between a sexual act and a highly emotional and spiritual endeavor to complete oneself, and also the bonding of two individuals into one whole entity. [See Aristophanes’ speech: “Love is born into every human being; it calls back the halves of our original nature together; it tries to make one out of two and heal the wound of human nature.”]

From the moment the lights went off Everything had changed Lie awake in an empty room In my head it all feels the same Like the taste of the day you left That still lingers on my breath And the dampness of tears that left A stain where you had wept All alone with the negligee That still hangs off of my bed I keep meaning to give it away But I just leave it there instead No need to cry about it I cannot live without it Every time I wind up back at your door Why do you do this to me? You penetrate right through me Every time I wind up back at your door 3 more days ’til I see your face I’m afraid it’s far too much Cook a meal and fix up the place Dial your number, hang it up If I took you for granted I apologize for acting tough You’re my reason for living And there’s no way I’m giving up, oh Don’t need to cry about it I cannot live without it Every time I wind up back at your door Why do you do this to me? You penetrate right through me Every time I wind up back at your door Now every evening is a bitter fight And I’m eating home alone on a Friday night I know what your friends say “You’re just wasting your love and time” I will never let you change your mind No need to cry about it I cannot live without it Every time I wind up back at your door Why do you do this to me? You penetrate right through me Every time I wind up back at your door No need to cry about it I may just die without it Every time I wind up back at your door Why do you do this to me? Parallels between Aeneid (Ancient Text) and (Contemporary Song) by Nujabes

The song “Battlecry” by Nujabes, has strong similiarities to the story of Aeneas. It describes a lone hero, who must forge his own path in order to save the day in the end. Aeneas, likewise, is ultimately alone in his journey to found Rome, but in the end he will create the foundations of an empire.

Sharp like an edge of a samurai sword The mental blade cut through flesh and bone Though my mind’s at peace, the world out of order Missing the inner heat, life gets colder Oh yes, I have to find my path No less, walk on earth, water, and fire The elements compose a magnum opus My modus is operandi is amalgam Steel packed tight in microchip On my arm a sign of all-pro The ultimate reward is honor, not awards At odds with the times in wars with no lords A freelancer A battle cry of a hawk make a dove fly and a tear dry Wonder why a lone wolf don’t run with a klan Only trust your instincts and be one with the plan [Hook] Some days, some nights Some live, some die In the way of the samurai Some fight, some bleed Sun up to sun down The sons of a battlecry Some days, some nights Some live, some die In the way of the samurai Some fight, some bleed Sun up to sun down The sons of a battlecry [Verse 2] Look, just the air around him An aura surrounding the heir apparent He might be a peasant but shine like grand royalty He to the people and land, loyalty We witness above all to hear this Sea sickness in the ocean of wickedness Set sail to the sun set no second guessing Far east style with the spirit of wild west The “quote-unquote” code stands the test of Time for the chosen ones to find the best of Noble minds that ever graced the face of A hemisphere with no fear, fly over The blue yonder where The sky meets the sea And eye meets no eye And boy meets world And became a man to serve the world To save the day, the night, and the girl too

Beyonce’s “Beautiful Liar” opens with the idea that she had fallen in love with a man who had lied to her in order to be with her. Ovid advises a similar approach to Roman men, often telling them to do whatever is necessary to convince a woman to spend time with them.

This song describes someone who instantly falls in love with a stranger even though they will probably end up being their downfall, or the devil as the lyrics refer. This reflects the setting when Medea fell in love with Jason. She immediately fell for him without even knowing him. So she took a chance on him and risked everything for him even though he ended up making her “pay in tears” and more.

Both the poem and the song deal with wayward lovers and punishing them. In Simaitha’s case, if she can’t bring her lover back than she will kill him so no one else can have him. In the song, she doesn’t seem too interested in getting him back but instead she focuses on punishing him for his infidelity.

This song describes how a woman became bewitched by another man and how she was forced into it by love. Near the end, her mind is finally clear and she admits she was sad when he left but now she no longer is under the spell of love. This describes very well the relationship with Dido & Aeneas. She literally had a spell of love casted on her by the god of love although she didn’t know Aeneas very well. And after he leaves she is devastated. However in the underworld when she sees him she is no longer under the spell of love and completely ignores him.
