Parallels between Aristophanes's Speech in The Symposium (Ancient Text) and (Contemporary Song) by Savage Garden

ParallelLyricsListen
Both the ancient text and the lyrics of both of these songs talk about each person finding his or her soul mate; the person they are meant to be with. The lyrics particularly relate to the part in Aristophanes’s speech where he says, “And such a nature is prone to love and ready to return love, always embracing that which is akin to him. And when one of them meets with his other half, the actual half of himself, whether he be a lover of youth or a lover of another sort, the pair are lost in an amazement of love and friendship and intimacy, and one will not be out of the other’s sight, as I may say, even for a moment: these are the people who pass their whole lives together, and yet they could not explain what they desire of one another. For the intense yearning which each of them has towards the other does not appear to be the desire of lover’s intercourse, but of something else which the soul of either evidently desires and cannot tell, and of which she has only a dark and doubtful presentiment.”

Maybe it’s intuition
But some things you just don’t question
Like in your eyes
I see my future in an instant
and there it goes
I think I’ve found my best friend
I know that it might sound more than
a little crazy but I believe
[chorus:]
I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life
There’s just no rhyme or reason
only this sense of completion
and in your eyes
I see the missing pieces
I’m searching for
I think I found my way home
I know that it might sound more than
a little crazy but I believe
[repeat chorus]
A thousand angels dance around you
I am complete now that I found you
[repeat chorus to fade]

In both cases we find a tie between a sexual act and a highly emotional and spiritual endeavor to complete oneself, and also the bonding of two individuals into one whole entity. [See Aristophanes’ speech: “Love is born into every human being; it calls back the halves of our original nature together; it tries to make one out of two and heal the wound of human nature.”]

Candle light and soul forever
A dream of you and me together
Say you believe it, say you believe it
Free your mind of doubt and danger
Be for real, don’t be a stranger
We can achieve it, we can achieve it
Come a little bit closer
Baby, get it on, get it on
‘Cause tonight is the night when 2 become 1
I need some love like I never needed love before
(Wanna make love to ya, baby)
I had a little love, now I’m back for more
(Wanna make love to ya, baby)
Set your spirit free, it’s the only way to be
Silly games that you were playing
Empty words we both were saying
Let’s work it out, boy, let’s work it out, boy
Any deal that we endeavor
Boys and girls feel good together
Take it or leave it, take it or leave it
Are you as good as I remember
Baby, get it on, get it on
‘Cause tonight is the night when 2 become 1
I need some love like I never needed love before
(Wanna make love to ya, baby)
I had a little love, now I’m back for more
(Wanna make love to ya, baby)
Set your spirit free, it’s the only way to be
Oh whoa, oh whoa
Be a little bit wiser
Baby, put it on, put it on
‘Cause tonight is the night when 2 become 1
I need some love like I never needed love before
(Wanna make love to ya, baby)
I had a little love, now I’m back for more

From the moment the lights went off
Everything had changed
Lie awake in an empty room
In my head it all feels the same
Like the taste of the day you left
That still lingers on my breath
And the dampness of tears that left
A stain where you had wept
All alone with the negligee
That still hangs off of my bed
I keep meaning to give it away
But I just leave it there instead
No need to cry about it
I cannot live without it
Every time I wind up back at your door
Why do you do this to me?
You penetrate right through me
Every time I wind up back at your door
3 more days ’til I see your face
I’m afraid it’s far too much
Cook a meal and fix up the place
Dial your number, hang it up
If I took you for granted
I apologize for acting tough
You’re my reason for living
And there’s no way I’m giving up, oh
Don’t need to cry about it
I cannot live without it
Every time I wind up back at your door
Why do you do this to me?
You penetrate right through me
Every time I wind up back at your door
Now every evening is a bitter fight
And I’m eating home alone on a Friday night
I know what your friends say
“You’re just wasting your love and time”
I will never let you change your mind
No need to cry about it
I cannot live without it
Every time I wind up back at your door
Why do you do this to me?
You penetrate right through me
Every time I wind up back at your door
No need to cry about it
I may just die without it
Every time I wind up back at your door
Why do you do this to me?
You penetrate right through me
Every time I wind up back at your door

The song “Battlecry” by Nujabes, has strong similiarities to the story of Aeneas. It describes a lone hero, who must forge his own path in order to save the day in the end. Aeneas, likewise, is ultimately alone in his journey to found Rome, but in the end he will create the foundations of an empire.

Sharp like an edge of a samurai sword
The mental blade cut through flesh and bone
Though my mind’s at peace, the world out of order
Missing the inner heat, life gets colder
Oh yes, I have to find my path
No less, walk on earth, water, and fire
The elements compose a magnum opus
My modus is operandi is amalgam
Steel packed tight in microchip
On my arm a sign of all-pro
The ultimate reward is honor, not awards
At odds with the times in wars with no lords
A freelancer
A battle cry of a hawk make a dove fly and a tear dry
Wonder why a lone wolf don’t run with a klan
Only trust your instincts and be one with the plan
[Hook]
Some days, some nights
Some live, some die
In the way of the samurai
Some fight, some bleed
Sun up to sun down
The sons of a battlecry
Some days, some nights
Some live, some die
In the way of the samurai
Some fight, some bleed
Sun up to sun down
The sons of a battlecry
[Verse 2]
Look, just the air around him
An aura surrounding the heir apparent
He might be a peasant but shine like grand royalty
He to the people and land, loyalty
We witness above all to hear this
Sea sickness in the ocean of wickedness
Set sail to the sun set no second guessing
Far east style with the spirit of wild west
The “quote-unquote” code stands the test of
Time for the chosen ones to find the best of
Noble minds that ever graced the face of
A hemisphere with no fear, fly over
The blue yonder where
The sky meets the sea
And eye meets no eye
And boy meets world
And became a man to serve the world
To save the day, the night, and the girl too

That’s why it’ll never work
You’ll have me suicidal, suicidal
When you say it’s over
Damn all these beautiful girls
They only wanna do you dirt
They’ll have you suicidal, suicidal
When they say it’s over
[Verse 1:]
See it started at the park
Used to chill after dark
Oh when you took my heart
That’s when we fell apart
Cause we both thought
That love lasts forever (lasts forever)
They say we’re too young
To get ourselves sprung
Oh we didn’t care
We made it very clear
And they also said
That we couldn’t last together (last together)
[Refrain:]
See it’s very define girl,
one of a kind
But you mash up my mind
You have to get declined
Oh Lord…
My baby is driving me crazy
[Repeat Chorus]
[Verse 2:]
It was back in ’99
Watchin’ movies all the time
Oh when I went away
For doin’ my first crime
And I never thought
That we was gonna see each other (see each other)
And then I came out
Mami moved me down South
Oh I’m with my girl
Who I thought was my world
It came out to be
That she wasn’t the girl for me (girl for me)
[Repeat Refrain and Chorus]
[Verse 3:]
Now we’re fussin’
And now we’re fightin’
Please tell me why
I’m feelin’ slighted
And I don’t know
How to make it better (make it better)
You’re datin’ other guys
You’re tellin’ me lies
Oh I can’t believe
What I’m seein’ with my eyes
I’m losin’ my mind
And I don’t think it’s clever (think it’s clever)

Beyonce’s “Beautiful Liar” opens with the idea that she had fallen in love with a man who had lied to her in order to be with her. Ovid advises a similar approach to Roman men, often telling them to do whatever is necessary to convince a woman to spend time with them.

Parallels between Jason & Medea (Ancient Text) and (Contemporary Song) by Madonna

This song describes someone who instantly falls in love with a stranger even though they will probably end up being their downfall, or the devil as the lyrics refer. This reflects the setting when Medea fell in love with Jason. She immediately fell for him without even knowing him. So she took a chance on him and risked everything for him even though he ended up making her “pay in tears” and more.

Haven’t we met
You’re some kind of beautiful stranger
You could be good for me
I’ve had the taste for danger
If I’m smart then I’ll run away
But I’m not so I guess I’ll stay
Heaven forbid
I’ll take my chance on a beautiful stranger
I looked into your eyes
And my world came tumbling down
You’re the devil in disguise
That’s why I’m singing this song
To know you is to love you
You’re everywhere I go
And everybody knows
To love you is to be part of you
I’ve paid for you with tears
And swallowed all my pride
Da-da-da-dum da-dum da-dum da da da-da dum
Beautiful stranger
Da-da-da-dum da-dum da-dum da da da-da dum
Beautiful stranger
If I’m smart then I’ll run away
But I’m not so I guess I’ll stay
Haven’t you heard
I fell in love with a beautiful stranger
I looked into your face
My heart was dancing all over the place
I’d like to change my point of view
If I could just forget about you
I looked into your eyes
And my world came tumbling down
You’re the devil in disguise
That’s why I’m singing this song to you

Both the poem and the song deal with wayward lovers and punishing them. In Simaitha’s case, if she can’t bring her lover back than she will kill him so no one else can have him. In the song, she doesn’t seem too interested in getting him back but instead she focuses on punishing him for his infidelity.

Ha!
Time for a little revenge
The story starts when it was hot and it was summer and…
I had it all, I had him right there where I wanted him
She came along, got him alone and let’s hear the applause
She took him faster than you could say “sabotage”
I never saw it coming, wouldn’t have suspected it
I underestimated just who I was dealing with
She had to know the pain was beating on me like a drum
She underestimated just who she was stealing from
She’s not a saint
And she’s not what you think
She’s an actress, whoa
She’s better known
For the things that she does
On the mattress, whoa
Soon she’s gonna find
Stealing other people’s toys
On the playground won’t
Make you many friends
She should keep in mind
She should keep in mind
There is nothing I do better than revenge
She looks at life like it’s a party and she’s on the list
She looks at me like I’m a trend and she’s so over it
I think her ever-present frown is a little troubling
And she thinks I’m psycho ’cause I like to rhyme her name with things
But sophistication isn’t what you wear or who you know
Or pushing people down to get you where you wanna go
They wouldn’t teach you that in prep school so it’s up to me
But no amount of vintage dresses gives you dignity
She’s not a saint
And she’s not what you think
She’s an actress, whoa
She’s better known
For the things that she does
On the mattress, whoa
Soon she’s gonna find
Stealing other people’s toys
On the playground won’t
Make you many friends
She should keep in mind
She should keep in mind
There is nothing I do better than revenge
I’m just another thing for you
To roll your eyes at, honey
You might have him but haven’t you heard
I’m just another thing for you
To roll your eyes at, honey
You might have him but I always get the last word
Whoa
She’s not a saint
And she’s not what you think
She’s an actress, whoa
She’s better known
For the things that she does
On the mattress, whoa
Soon she’s gonna find
Stealing other people’s toys
On the playground won’t

‘Cause I don’t think you do. Oh.
Do you still feel like you know what you’re doing?
I don’t think you do
I don’t think you do

This song describes how a woman became bewitched by another man and how she was forced into it by love. Near the end, her mind is finally clear and she admits she was sad when he left but now she no longer is under the spell of love. This describes very well the relationship with Dido & Aeneas. She literally had a spell of love casted on her by the god of love although she didn’t know Aeneas very well. And after he leaves she is devastated. However in the underworld when she sees him she is no longer under the spell of love and completely ignores him.

After one whole quart of brandy
Like a daisy I awake
With no Bromo Seltzer handy
I don’t even shake
Men are not a new sensation
I’ve done pretty well, I think
But this half-pint imitation
Put me on the blink
I’m wild again
Beguiled again
A simpering, whimpering child again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered am I
Listen, baby
I couldn’t sleep
And wouldn’t sleep
Until I could sleep where I shouldn’t sleep
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered am I
Lost my heart but what of it?
My mistake I agree
Oh, she’s such a laugh and I love it
Although the laugh’s on me
Ooh, I’ll sing to him
Bring springs to him
And worship the trousers that cling to him
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered am I
Oh, you’re so cute
Ooh she’s kept enough, she’s slept enough
And yet, where it counts she’s adept enough
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered am I
When he talks he is seeking
Words to get off his chest
Horizontally speaking
She’s at her very best
Oh, we’ve seen a lot
I mean a lot
And now we’re like sweet seventeen a lot
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered am I
Oh, we’re vexed again
Perplexed again
Thank God we can’t be over-sexed again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered am I

This song is about love lost and how one member is always more hurt than the other. The artist is at a loss for what to do as his beloved is alright post break-up and he is a broken man. This parallels Medea’s internal conflict over the actions she feels she must carry out to invoke in Jason the pain that he invoked in her.

I’m still alive but I’m barely breathing
Just praying to a God that I don’t believe in
‘Cause I got time while she got freedom
‘Cause when a heart breaks, no, it don’t break even
Her best days will be some of my worst
She finally met a man that’s gonna put her first
While I’m wide awake, she has no trouble sleeping
‘Cause when a heart breaks, no, it don’t break even, even, no
What am I suppose to do when the best part of me was always you?
And what am I supposed to say when I’m all choked up and you’re okay?
I’m falling to pieces
I’m falling to pieces
They say bad things happen for a reason
But no wise words gonna stop the bleeding
‘Cause she’s moved on while I’m still grieving
And when a heart breaks, no, it don’t break even, even, oww
What am I suppose to do when the best part of me was always you?

Callimachus states that only half of his soul is still breathing, and that the other half is dead. Similarly, in Ingrid Michaelson’s lyrics she doesn’t know what else to do except to continue breathing, because that’s all she can do. They both show evidence of feeling only half alive, and are simply existing by inhaling and exhaling.

The storm is coming but I don’t mind
People are dying, I close my blinds
All that I know is I’m breathing now
I want to change the world
Instead I sleep
I want to believe in more than you and me
But all that I know is I’m breathing
All I can do is keep breathing
All we can do is keep breathing now
All that I know is I’m breathing
All I can do is keep breathing.
All we can do is keep breathing
All we can do is keep breathing
All we can do is keep breathing
All we can do is keep breathing
All we can do is keep breathing
All we can do is keep breathing now

Medea is so in love with Jason that she goes “where ever he goes”. She leaves everything just to be with him. She is consumed and obsessed just like the feelings described in Colbie Caillat’s song.

Will you count me in?
I’ve been awake for a while now
You’ve got me feelin’ like a child now
‘Cause every time I see your bubbly face
I get the tingles in a silly place
It starts in my toes
And I crinkle my nose
Wherever it goes
I always know
That you make me smile
Please stay for a while now
Just take your time
Wherever you go
The rain is falling on my window pane
But we are hiding in a safer place
Under covers staying dry and warm
[Another version of the song says: “Under covers staying safe and warm”]
You give me feelings that I adore
They start in my toes
Make me crinkle my nose
Wherever it goes
I always know
That you make me smile
Please stay for a while
now just take your time
Wherever you go
But what am I gonna say:
When you make me feel this way
I just mmmmm
And it starts in my toes
Makes me crinkle my nose
Wherever it goes
I always know
That you make me smile
Please stay for a while
Now just take your time
Wherever you go
Dada dumdudum dumdadadadadum
Ohbodododododododum mmm mmm
I’ve been asleep for a while now
You tuck me in just like a child now
‘Cause every time you hold me in your arms
I’m comfortable enough to feel your warmth
It starts in my soul
And I lose all control
When you kiss my nose
The feeling shows
‘Cause you make me smile,
Baby, just take your time
Now holdin’ me tight
Wherever, wherever, wherever you go
Wherever, wherever, wherever you go
Wherever you go
I always know
‘Cause you make me smile
Even just for a while
