Beyonce’s “Beautiful Liar” opens with the idea that she had fallen in love with a man who had lied to her in order to be with her. Ovid advises a similar approach to Roman men, often telling them to do whatever is necessary to convince a woman to spend time with them.

This song describes someone who instantly falls in love with a stranger even though they will probably end up being their downfall, or the devil as the lyrics refer. This reflects the setting when Medea fell in love with Jason. She immediately fell for him without even knowing him. So she took a chance on him and risked everything for him even though he ended up making her “pay in tears” and more.

Both the poem and the song deal with wayward lovers and punishing them. In Simaitha’s case, if she can’t bring her lover back than she will kill him so no one else can have him. In the song, she doesn’t seem too interested in getting him back but instead she focuses on punishing him for his infidelity.

Like Medea, Taylor Swift talks about someone taking her man and she is out to get revenge. She also describes the pain in being left for another woman and describes it as “the pain was beating on me like a drum”

This song describes how a woman became bewitched by another man and how she was forced into it by love. Near the end, her mind is finally clear and she admits she was sad when he left but now she no longer is under the spell of love. This describes very well the relationship with Dido & Aeneas. She literally had a spell of love casted on her by the god of love although she didn’t know Aeneas very well. And after he leaves she is devastated. However in the underworld when she sees him she is no longer under the spell of love and completely ignores him.

This song is about love lost and how one member is always more hurt than the other. The artist is at a loss for what to do as his beloved is alright post break-up and he is a broken man. This parallels Medea’s internal conflict over the actions she feels she must carry out to invoke in Jason the pain that he invoked in her.

Callimachus states that only half of his soul is still breathing, and that the other half is dead. Similarly, in Ingrid Michaelson’s lyrics she doesn’t know what else to do except to continue breathing, because that’s all she can do. They both show evidence of feeling only half alive, and are simply existing by inhaling and exhaling.

Medea is so in love with Jason that she goes “where ever he goes”. She leaves everything just to be with him. She is consumed and obsessed just like the feelings described in Colbie Caillat’s song.
