The artist of this song describes the aftermath of being burned by love and her attempt to not let it happen again. This parallels Catallus’ description of his emotions after Lesbia’s infidelity. He explains that he wishes to no longer love her and how he has to toughen up. He knows that she cannot be chaste so he asks the gods to simply make him impermeable to the pain that she inflicts.

“your tempting laugh, which sets my heart a-flutter in my breast. For when I see you even a moment, I can’t speak any longer” The feelings that both Sappho and ‘Allstars’ are talking about are those associated with infatuation. They both refer to “butterflies in the stomach” and being “tongue-tied” when confronted by their love.

Seeing is central to desire and love.

In Advice to the Bride and Groom, Plutarch has a list of things that a wife should and should not do. Plutarch seems to have a very traditional view of women in that he expects them to stay within the domestic sphere, not upset their husbands, and tend to the husband’s needs. Destiny’s Child’s song Cater 2 U is all about a woman wanting to pamper her lover and serving hiim. I found it very interesting that there was a link between modern society and the ancient world. There is still the view that women taking care of their lovers and giving her all to a man is desirable.

The song talks about young girls being married off by their fathers. These segments from Shelton describe arranged marriages and child brides.

This song describes Penelope’s relationship with Odysseus because she is longing for him to come home–the lyrics say But there?s someone i’ve been missing And i think that they could be the better half of me “They’re in the wrong place tryin’ to make it right But i’m tired of justifying So i say to you come home come home ’cause i?ve been waiting for ya for so long for so long And right now there’s a war between the vanities But all i see is you and me And the fight for you is all i’ve ever known So come home.”–It’s almost the perfect description for Penelope because she is waiting for Odysseus to come home so all of the suitors can leave.

Lil Wayne’s song Comfortable describes a man singing about a woman. His chorus reveals that although the sex may be great, he needs more spiritual love, and if his beloved cannot do that he is not afraid to end things. Polyphemus, along a similar vain, comes to his senses over his emotive pining for Galatea. The cyclops realizes that he is better off doing his work as a herdsman because there are plenty of other women who would love to have him.

This song is about coming home again after being away for a long time, hoping that nothing has changed, and that they can make up for lost time. These lyrics relate well to the story of Penelope and Odysseus when he returned from his 20 year absence to see her. Odysseus tries to convince Penelope that it is him and nothing has changed and he has missed her. Finally they rekindle their relationship at the end when they lie together to make up for their time away from each other.

A white stripes song about a guy who looks to go and fool around with a girl. he thinks that he has her conquered but she turns the tables on him. similar to Plato and Alcibiades in the symposium. Alcibiades is upset because he was once the beloved of Socrates and now he is the lover, while Socrates has taken a shining to Agathon.

In the poem, Catullus tells Lesbia that although she said that he’s the only man in her life, he knows that she is lying. In the song, the singer talks about a girl he loves who is lying to him and he knows it.

In Epode 196, Archilochus writes that his desire has completely unhinged him and taken control of him. Similarly, Gnarls Barkley sings that the object of his desire has driven him crazy. His love seems to have no interest in the singer’s condition. He laughs at his lover because she thinks that she is in control. However, ironically she really is controlling him from afar because he cannot do anything but think of her and become crazier.

This song references a man falling inlove because he was struck by ‘cupid’, but like how Medea was struck by Eros and fell inlove with Jason. Also, Jason finds a new ‘girlfriend’ much like the main character of the song”

I see all the lyrics to this song as could have easily been written by Daphnis to Chloe during the winter when he missed her and longed for her and wanted nothing more than to go out into the fields and play with her like he used to.

Both passages speak to the obvious nature of the girl’s promiscuity and the heavy cost of shame that is a result of this.
