Dangers of loving a woman.

Click for Lyrics
Well after all, Pickering, I’m an ordinary man, Who desires nothing more than an ordinary chance, to live exactly as he likes, and do precisely what he wants… An average man am I, of no eccentric whim, Who likes to live his life, free of strife, doing whatever he thinks is best, for him, Well… just an ordinary man… BUT, Let a woman in your life and your serenity is through, she’ll redecorate your home, from the cellar to the dome, and then go on to the enthralling fun of overhauling you… Let a woman in your life, and you’re up against a wall, make a plan and you will find, that she has something else in mind, and so rather than do either you do something else that neither likes at all You want to talk of Keats and Milton, she only wants to talk of love, You go to see a play or ballet, and spend it searching for her glove, Let a woman in your life and you invite eternal strife, Let them buy their wedding bands for those anxious little hands… I’d be equally as willing for a dentist to be drilling than to ever let a woman in my life, I’m a very gentle man, even tempered and good natured who you never hear complain, Who has the milk of human kindness by the quart in every vein, A patient man am I, down to my fingertips, the sort who never could, ever would, let an insulting remark escape his lips Very gentle man… But, Let a woman in your life, and patience hasn’t got a chance, she will beg you for advice, your reply will be concise, and she will listen very nicely, and then go out and do exactly what she wants!!! You are a man of grace and polish, who never spoke above a hush, all at once you’re using language that would make a sailor blush, Let a woman in your life, and you’re plunging in a knife, Let the others of my sex, tie the knot around their necks, I prefer a new edition of the Spanish Inquisition than to ever let a woman in my life I’m a quiet living man, who prefers to spend the evening in the silence of his room, who likes an atmosphere as restful as an undiscovered tomb, A pensive man am I, of philosophical joys, who likes to meditate, contemplate, far for humanities mad inhuman noise, Quiet living man…. But, let a woman in your life, and your sabbatical is through, in a line that never ends comes an army of her friends, come to jabber and to chatter and to tell her what the matter is with YOU!, she’ll have a booming boisterous family, who will descend on you en mass, she’ll have a large wagnarian mother, with a voice that shatters glass, Let a woman in your life, Let a woman in your life, Let a woman in your life I shall never let a woman in my life.

Parallels between Odessy (Ancient Text) and (Contemporary Song) by Lupe Fiasco

In this song, Lupe Fiasco tells the story of a kid looking for a place to ride his skateboard. A home. It is a long journey filled with perils but he eventually finds his place alongside a group of good friends and a girl who shares his love for skateboarding. This reminded me of Odysseus’ journey and how he finally reached home. The main purpose of his return home was to reunite with Penelope, just like how the character in “Kick, Push” finds that what he needs most his his girlfriend and his friends.

Like a fool, I fell in love with you, Turned my whole world upside down. [Chorus] Let’s make the best of the situation Before I finally go insane. Please don’t say we’ll never find a way And tell me all my love’s in vain. [Chorus 2x]

The chorus “Just gonna stand there and watch me burn But that’s alright because I like the way it hurts” reminds me of when Dido commits suicide. The rest of the song also contains imagery that we’ve seen associated with love including: “High off of love, drunk from my hate” and “it’s a steel knife in my windpipe”

On the first page of our story The future seemed so bright Then this thing turned out so evil I don’t know why I’m still surprised Even angels have their wicked schemes And you take that to new extremes But you’ll always be my hero Even though you’ve lost your mind Just gonna stand there and watch me burn But that’s all right because I like the way it hurts Just gonna stand there and hear me cry But that’s all right because I love the way you lie I love the way you lie Oh, I love the way you lie Now there’s gravel in our voices Glass is shattered from the fight In this tug of war you’ll always win Even when I’m right ‘Cause you feed me fables from your hand With violent words and empty threats And it’s sick that all these battles Are what keeps me satisfied Just gonna stand there and watch me burn But that’s all right because I like the way it hurts Just gonna stand there and hear me cry But that’s all right because I love the way you lie I love the way you lie Oh, I love the way you lie So maybe I’m a masochist I try to run but I don’t wanna ever leave ‘Til the walls are goin’ up In smoke with all our memories It’s morning, you wake, a sun ray hits your face Smeared makeup as we lay in the wake of destruction Hush baby, speak softly, tell me you’re awfully sorry That you pushed me into the coffee table last night So I can push you off me Try and touch me so I can scream at you not to touch me Run out the room and I’ll follow you like a lost puppy Baby, without you I’m nothing, I’m so lost, hug me Then tell me how ugly I am, but that you’ll always love me Then after that, shove me, in the aftermath of the Destructive path that we’re on, two psychopaths but we Know that no matter how many knives we put in each other’s backs That we’ll have each other’s backs, ’cause we’re that lucky Together, we move mountains, let’s not make mountains out of molehills, You hit me twice, yeah, but who’s countin’? I may have hit you three times, I’m startin’ to lose count But together, we’ll live forever, we found the youth fountain Our love is crazy, we’re nuts, but I refuse counsellin’ This house is too huge, if you move out I’ll burn all two thousand Square feet of it to the ground, ain’t shit you can do about it ‘Cause with you I’m in my fuckin’ mind, without you I’m out it Just gonna stand there and watch me burn But that’s all right because I like the way it hurts Just gonna stand there and hear me cry But that’s all right because I love the way you lie I love the way you lie Oh, I love the way you lie I love the way you lie [3x]

In Meleager’s poems he is hopelessly in love with Heliodora, and while it causes him much pain he continues to love her because he can’t help it (and he might in an odd way enjoy the pain and chase that comes from loving her). Ovid’s poem is about how the girl that he loves is clearly sleeping with other men. He can see that her hair is tangled, she has bite marks on her neck, and her bed is messy. He says that he would rather be a fool than have to know that she is cheating on him. Similar to the song by the cardigans, which says “love me love me, say that you love me” and is then followed by the line “fool me fool me, go on and fool me”, which suggests that even if the person they love doesn’t love them back, they should at least pretend like they do, and fool the person to make them feel better.
