In this passage in Longus, Daphnis says that a fire is burning his heart, which is similiar to how Johnny Cash describes his own love by saying that he’s falling into a ring of fire.

Again, Blink-182 and Ovid go head to head comparing places to meet girls. The boys of Blink-182 have more luck at a Rock Show, perhaps comparable to Ovid’s Theater suggestion.

In the song “Roxanne,” a woman named Roxanne who works as a prostitute is being called back from under “the red light” and to stop working as a hooker. Catullus condemns a brothel that he finds to be the place where a woman that he once loved and went off to war to defend, Lesbia, now resides, and is selling sexual services to clients.

Both lovers threaten death as revenge for infidelity. See esp. lines 156ff. of the Idyll: “But now I haven’t seen him for eleven days. So, does he have some other joy, has he forgotten me? But now with these charms I’ll tie him down. And if he keeps on hurting me, I swear by the Fates, he’ll beat on teh gates of Death. So deadly are the drugs I keep for him in my chest, I’ll tell you, etc.

When Odysseus arrives home he spends a long night with his wife Penelope. Athene holds back dawn and allows the two to catch up while they lay together in bed. The next morning Odysseus must leave to see his father. The song “Save Tonight” by Eagle Eye Cherry describes this exact situation in which a man wants to fight off the break of dawn and spend as much time with his lover as he can before he must leave in the morning.

Both deal with woman as mishievous and capable of vice.

This song describes Catullus relationship with Lesbia, he will always love her, even though she is not often with him.

Both sources illuminate how a woman can be good and bad at the same time.

Ne-Yo sings about a girl who left him. She’s caused him great pain and suffering but he cannot get over her. Catullus writes that he could no longer love Lesbia, but that he cannot stop wanting her either. The same goes for Ne-Yo. Although he knows that the relationship is longer, everything around him reminds him of his ex-girlfriend and makes him want her more.

In common is the concept that Aphrodite has domain over everyone and that no one is exempt from this. Haggard uses the word love in two different ways, one sexual and the other emotional. It also displays the arrogance of someone who felt that he was exempt from love as well as the clever bitterness with which Haggard comes to the realization that he isn’t exempt (the titular line) – it’s kind of his trademark. Additionally, it’s a great honky tonk song.

The song made famous by Jefferson Airplane about love lost fits well with Euripede’s Medea – she falls out of love with Jason once she realizes that she followed him for all the wrong reasons and that their marriage is not a “happy” one. Medea questions her ability to love Jason, hence the “don’t you want somebody to love?”

In the poem, Catullus writes about how jealous he is that another man is with Lesbia and how he wishes that he were that man. The singer in the song also sings about how the girl he wants is out with other men and how he wishes that he were the one who was out with her.

In Homer’s Iliad, Hektor is needed in battle and visits his wife and son before returning to battle. His wife Andromache fears he will certainly die if he returns to battle. In the song “Space Oddity” by David Bowie lyrics describe an astronaut that is drifting through space and losing transmission to ground control. The astronaut is able to get off one message before he dies and that is to tell his wife he loves her, like Hektor does for his wife before battle.

Taylor Swift has to break up a marriage for the boy she loves, much like Aechinus almost loses the love of his life with his father plays a trick on him saying she was going to marry someone else.
